Gemini can now phone businesses for customers. Is your front desk ready for AI callers?

What happened

Google has started an early experiment on Pixel 11 that lets Gemini call local businesses on a user's behalf. According to The Verge, you tell Gemini what you need, and it calls the business, introduces itself, navigates automated phone menus, waits on hold and handles the conversation. Google's examples include making a reservation, checking whether a product is in stock and rescheduling an appointment. The user sees a live transcript and can take over at any time.

TechCrunch reports the calls go out from the user's own phone number, and that Gemini can now share personal information the user approves, which lets it take a broader set of actions than earlier features like "Ask for Me" and "Hold for Me." For now it is limited to US Pixel 11 owners with a paid Gemini subscription who use the beta Phone app. Google says it is starting small because real-world conversations are nuanced. The Verge notes Meta is working on a similar calling feature for its Muse agent.

My take

This is a small launch, but the direction is clear: customers will send agents to do the boring calls. For a clinic, salon, repair shop or restaurant, that changes a few things.

  1. Your phone tree becomes an interface for software. Long, unclear menus waste the agent's time and the customer's patience.
  2. Answers to routine questions should match what is on your website and in your booking system, because agents will compare.
  3. Front desk staff need a simple rule for AI callers: treat them like the customer, confirm details, and send a written confirmation to the customer's contact on file.
  4. The more you can handle with online booking and SMS, the fewer calls anyone needs to make at all.

The businesses that do well here are the ones where booking, rescheduling and stock checks already run through a clean system, whether the request comes from a human, a web form or an AI on the other end of the line.
