From October 9, free Gemini accounts drop to Flash-Lite. Check which client work runs on personal AI logins
A pricing change aimed at consumers can still break a business process, if that process lives in someone's personal chat window.
What happened
Google's Gemini help center says that starting in October 2026, model availability changes for Gemini Apps used with a personal account. For users without an AI subscription, the changes start taking effect on October 9. AI Plus subscribers will get an email saying when the changes reach them.
According to The Decoder's reading of the new tiers, users without a subscription will only get Flash-Lite, the smallest model. AI Plus ($4.99 a month) keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro. All three models need AI Pro ($19.99 a month) or AI Ultra. The current free tier offers 3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro.
Google also says Gemini will move to compute based usage limits that refresh every 5 hours until a weekly limit is reached, with usage based on prompt complexity, features used and chat length. These pages cover personal accounts; work and school accounts are documented separately.
The Decoder expects the real world impact to be small, since most casual users do not know which model they run.
My take
For casual users, that is probably right. For small teams, I would not be so sure. In many businesses I audit, a real chunk of client work runs through someone's free personal AI account: drafting proposals, summarising call notes, cleaning spreadsheets. Nobody chose a model. It was just the tab that was open.
When the model behind that tab gets smaller, nothing errors out. The output just gets a little worse, and nobody connects the drop to a pricing page.
What I would do this week:
- List the AI steps people do by hand. Ask the team which recurring tasks they paste into a chat app.
- Move the repeated ones onto a business account or the API, where you choose the model and it does not change underneath you.
- Turn the most common prompt into a workflow. If someone pastes the same instructions every Monday, that belongs in n8n or Make with a pinned model and a saved prompt.
Not sure which of your team's daily AI tasks are worth turning into a proper workflow? Send me the one your team repeats most and I will tell you honestly whether it is worth automating. Start at romielwillautomate.dev.
