Google is replacing Gems with Skills. If a Workspace Studio flow uses Ask a Gem, it has a deadline
Google's prompt format is changing, and one line in the announcement matters for anyone automating in Workspace.
What happened
Google is replacing Gems in Gemini with Skills: saved, reusable instructions you call by typing "/" and the skill name. The Decoder reports that Gemini can also run a Skill automatically when it detects a matching prompt, that Skills can be chained, and that the format is based on an open standard that originated with Anthropic. Reference material can include text documents, PDFs and images.
Google's Workspace Updates blog lays out the timeline. Skills begin rolling out in Workspace on October 5, 2026 and in the Gemini app on October 13. On November 17, Gems move to the Settings panel but still work. For business and enterprise customers, no sooner than March 1, 2027, Gems can no longer be created, edited or used, remaining Gems are auto-migrated to draft skills, and flows in Workspace Studio with the Ask a Gem step stop working. Education follows no sooner than June 1, 2027.
My take
The auto-migration covers the prompt. It does not cover the automations wired around it. If a client has a Workspace Studio flow that calls a Gem to summarize a form response or draft a reply, that flow breaks on the cutoff unless someone rebuilds the step.
What I would do:
- List every Gem in use and every Studio flow with an Ask a Gem step.
- Recreate the important Gems as Skills early and compare outputs on real inputs.
- Rebuild flows on the Skill version before the deadline, not on it.
There is a bigger shift here too. With Google, OpenAI and Anthropic converging on skills style formats, your instructions are becoming portable. Write them like documentation: one job per skill, clear inputs, a clear output format, and examples. Good skills will move across tools. Vague prompts will not.
Do you have prompts or Gems your team leans on daily? Send me the one you would hate to lose via romielwillautomate.dev, and I can help you turn it into a skill that holds up.
