93% of GTM teams run AI agents, and nearly a third cannot say how many touch their CRM
AI agents are already writing to your CRM. The new question is whether anyone knows which ones.
What happened
MarTech reported on LeanData's 2026 State of AI Go-to-Market Readiness research, a survey of 157 B2B practitioners across RevOps, marketing ops, sales, marketing and IT, run in May 2026. According to MarTech, 93% of GTM teams have deployed at least one AI agent, yet nearly a third could not say how many agents were taking actions on their records, and 30% had found actions taken without an audit trail.
The side effects are the kind operators recognize: 27% saw multiple tools or agents contact the same prospect, and 17% saw marketing sequences fire while a sales rep was working the deal. In LeanData's own release, 45% said AI initiatives stall because of inconsistent or incomplete CRM data, 37% pointed to undocumented business processes and 32% to siloed teams. 60% said they fear agents acting on inaccurate data or the wrong records. MarTech also reports that 19% have no designated owner for GTM AI.
My take
None of this is a model problem. It is a plumbing problem, and it is fixable.
When I audit a CRM before adding any AI, these are the first things I check:
- An agent inventory. Every tool or agent with write access, what it can touch, and who owns it.
- One writer per field. If both a sequencing tool and an agent can update lifecycle stage, you will get the double contact problem the survey describes.
- A log of every automated write. A simple note or activity entry per action beats a missing audit trail.
- Ownership rules checked before outreach, so marketing cannot fire at a deal a rep is actively working.
- Clean data first. Dedupe, required fields, and documented stage definitions.
The teams that get value from agents in HubSpot, GoHighLevel or Pipedrive will be the ones who treat each agent like a new hire with a narrow job description and a paper trail.
