HubSpot now caps AI credit spend at 50% over your allowance by default. Know which workflows pause when you hit it

HubSpot gave admins real brakes on AI spend. The brake works by pausing features, so plan for that day.

What happened

HubSpot announced new pricing and billing options on Thursday, as reported by MarTech. The changes include account-level spending limits on HubSpot credits, the ability to exchange unused seats for credits, and more payment options when usage goes past monthly allocations.

By default, the account-level cap sits at 50% above a customer's monthly allocation, and admins can adjust it. Teams can pick fixed monthly credit packs or pay-as-you-go billing. Customers can also swap between eligible seat types mid-contract, and HubSpot is enabling hard limits on marketing contact tiers to prevent automatic upgrades when contact lists grow.

HubSpot's knowledge base fills in the operating details. When an account reaches its spend limit, features that use credits pause until the next reset date. Super Admins and Billing Admins get emails at 75%, 85% and 90% usage, and again when the limit is reached. Unused credits expire at the end of each period and do not roll over. For credits bought on or after September 16, 2026, pay-as-you-go is the default billing setting.

My take

Spend caps are good news. I push clients to cap every AI service they run. But read the mechanism: when you hit the cap, credit-based features stop until the reset date.

For a portal running AI agents or AI workflow actions, that means a busy month can quietly switch off part of your process. Here is what I would do this week:

  • List every workflow and agent in the portal that consumes credits. Mark which ones touch leads or customers.
  • Send the 75% and 90% alert emails somewhere a person acts on them, not a shared inbox nobody reads.
  • For each critical workflow, decide the fallback. If the AI step pauses, does the record wait in a queue, go to a person, or skip the step?
  • Set the cap to a number finance agreed to, not the default.
  • Before a big list import, check where you stand against the new contact tier limit.

Usage pricing rewards teams that know what each automation costs to run. Track it per workflow, and the cap stops being a surprise.
