Marketo's co-founder launches Phave: marketing automation that reasons instead of following rules

The person who helped build rules-based marketing automation now says rules should only do half the job.

What happened

Jon Miller, co-founder of Marketo and Engagio, has launched Phave, an AI-native marketing automation platform aimed at enterprise B2B teams. CMSWire reports it was founded with Nick Bonfiglio, a former Marketo product and engineering lead, reached general availability in August after two years in stealth, and pitches itself as a replacement for Marketo, Pardot, Eloqua and HubSpot.

Instead of fixed if-then flows, Phave's engine, Maestro, builds a "Playlist" of touches for each person, account and buying group, ordered and timed toward an objective the marketer sets. Campaigns the team approves are the source material. Miller's line: "Consent, frequency and quiet hours should be rules. Choosing which of two good emails a person should get was never a job for a rule."

MarTech reports Phave exposes 319 tools through the Model Context Protocol, so AI agents can run marketing tasks directly. CMSWire adds that it can be used through its own interface, an existing AI client, or headlessly via MCP and a REST API, and that pricing starts at $36,000 a year based on people reached per month. The launch came a week after Salesforce and HubSpot showed their own agentic campaign tools.

My take

Whether or not Phave wins, the split it makes is the right one for anyone running HubSpot, GoHighLevel or Zoho today:

  1. Governance rules: consent, frequency caps, quiet hours, suppression lists. These stay hard coded and audited.
  2. Selection logic: which email, which order, which channel. This is where AI judgment can beat a pile of branches.

Most workflows I audit mix the two in one tangled flow. Separating them is useful now, even with your current tool, because it shows you which parts are safe to hand to an AI and which never should be. The other signal is MCP. Marketing platforms that agents can operate directly are becoming normal, which means your CRM data quality and naming conventions matter more than your dashboard layout.
