Pipedrive is downsizing across all its locations and says small businesses now ask AI which software to buy
Pipedrive is getting much smaller, and the reason its CEO gives should worry every service business, not just CRM vendors.
What happened
ERR obtained a letter from Pipedrive CEO Paulo Cunha telling staff the company will significantly reduce its size in all locations, with fewer teams, management layers and offices. He wrote that the changes affect most current jobs and roles, and that every employee would be spoken to individually over two days. The company employs nearly 800 people, about half in Estonia. Äripäev reported the Portuguese office is closing.
Cunha's reasons are specific. More small businesses ask AI for software recommendations, the free web traffic behind Pipedrive's growth has fallen sharply, and paid traffic costs more. He said the cuts are not about AI replacing people. Pipedrive says it will keep investing in the core CRM with a sharper focus on quality and reliability, and is building an AI-driven sales system that records sales conversations, keeps data current, recommends next steps and handles routine tasks.
My take
If your clients run on Pipedrive, nothing breaks today. Do not start a panic migration. But a vendor going through deep cuts is a good moment for three boring checks:
- Know your integration surface. List every webhook, API call and Zap or n8n workflow that touches Pipedrive, and who owns each one.
- Keep a copy of the data outside the CRM. A scheduled export of deals, contacts and activities to a sheet or database costs little and saves a lot if anything changes.
- Watch the native AI roadmap. The system Pipedrive describes, call recording, data hygiene and next step suggestions, is what many teams stitch together with custom automations today. If it ships natively, compare before you keep paying to maintain your own.
The bigger lesson is discovery. A well funded software company says buyers now ask AI instead of searching. Your clients' customers are doing the same, so their services need to be easy for AI answers to find and describe accurately.
