Zoho launches Zia Chat and seven industry apps: what it means for CRM builders
Zoho is betting that the next CRM interface is a chat box that sits on top of every app you already pay for.
What happened
On September 23, Zoho launched Zia Chat, a unified AI interface built natively into its ecosystem. According to the company, users can find information, generate leads, resolve support issues and analyse data across sales, marketing, support, HR and finance from one conversation. It can summarise records, turn data into reports, charts, spreadsheets and presentations, draft emails, assign tasks and schedule recurring reports.
Users can switch between role-based "Profiles" and delegate multi-step work to "Zia Agents". Zoho says the tool is model-agnostic, extensible to external systems through MCP integrations, and respects existing permissions and approval workflows. Responses can be traced back to underlying records, and data accessed by Zia Chat is not used to train Zoho's models. Early access opens in about a month, in English first.
Co-founder Sridhar Vembu said the goal is to "commoditise intelligence so customers can get work done, without incurring high costs on tokens."
Zoho also entered vertical SaaS with seven industry products, including Zoho RetailIQ (a CRM for physical retail), Zoho AutoDMS for car dealerships, Zoho LOS for loan origination, a real estate sales platform, and Zoho POS for Restaurants.
My take
Three details matter more than the chat box itself:
- MCP support. If Zia Chat can reach external systems over MCP, your Zoho data stops being an island. That is the difference between a nice assistant and something you can build real workflows around.
- Permissions and approvals carry over. Most AI rollouts stall on "who is allowed to see this". Inheriting existing roles removes a big blocker.
- Traceable answers. For CRM work, an answer you cannot trace to a record is a liability.
The vertical apps are the quieter story. A retail CRM or a dealership DMS ships with industry fields and flows, so less of your budget goes into custom setup and more into automations on top.
My advice: when early access opens, test Zia Chat on one boring, repeated task, like a weekly pipeline report, before handing it anything that writes to records.
What is the Zoho task your team dreads most? Send me a message and tell me. I will tell you honestly if it is worth automating. romielwillautomate.dev
